    Electrics

Hi Kev, Google for an auto changeover switch. It might be what you need to ensure no accidents. There is a member on Motorhomefacts who did something similar but the thread is 77 pages long and if you are not a member then the photos will be hidden. He mostly showed the work in photos...

    Selfbuild Control Panel

This guy posted a thread on another forum and I thought it might be suitable for members on here. He has designed a panel and the price does not seem to steep. Motorhome, camper, boat control display panel unit | eBay

    Cooker/Fridge/Hob Gas fitting...

You can do the installation yourself but it is illegal for you to open the gas tap. It needs to be checked out by someone who is qualified. This does not mean any gas Fitter but someone qualified in low pressure gas systems (ie not mains gas).

    WiRE SIZE?

I agree with Alf on this one. You only fit them once so use proper Copper multi strand cable as used in Battery powered Forklifts or even welding cable. Cheap jump leads are inferior quality.

    Thinking of Vauxhal vivaro ?

Every van built from 2007 onwards was a heap of crap .......... ironically EXCEPT the Ducato (which was only problematic when mated with a motorhome/campervan). I was looking to buy a medium sized van at the time and spoke to lots of owners/operators and did not bother as everyone was having...

Is it realistic to go all electric and no gas?

I know this is a wildcamping forum but a van should be able to manage without gas - such as due to a gas regulator failure. It would mean using a site but that is better than abandoning a holiday and gives time to source a new regulator. I found out the hard way when I used the van for work and...

Water heating for washing and showering.........

Burstner make one for their vans but it is not cheap. I have a system that blows warm air into the hab area while driving, again a Burstner accessory. It is basically a calorifier and could be rigged up by any capable amateur. Hot water from the engine cooling system pumped through a vessel...

    new batteries

I have had 2 of these batteries for 4 years now. Still going strong but I have solar, which extends battery life due to less discharge.

    Basic Electric & Internet

I get Fon for free because I am a BT customer. My aerial was around £70 normally but was reduced in price as they were bringing out a newer version and discontinuing mine. Another point to consider in cold weather. It hammers batteries, if you have no heating in the van it will decrease the...

    Basic Electric & Internet

Remember that a long range wifi aerial will take power from your laptop battery. I use a netbook because they have a longer battery life. On the subject of solar, an 80 watt panel will be sufficient ..... but probably not in Winter. You need to give more information on what length trips you...

    Basic Electric & Internet

Motorhome wifi sell the best kit for long range reception. I use one of their directional aerials and get good results. For Winter use, you will need plenty of solar, I would say at least 200 watts. About 200 amp/hour of battery power also. You will find that solar does not do a lot in Winter...

Converting mains current draw to 12v

Just working on a 12 volt supply (and discounting efficiency losses), if you use a 12V/19V inverter then the amps used will be 7.5 amps. This seems quite high but there again 4.75 amps @ 19 volts seems high. You will need a hookup , a big bank of batteries or plenty of solar power if you are...

Converting mains current draw to 12v

Turn it over and it should state the output in watts. My last one was 65W and I think most would be around that figure. The main thing you need to consider is how long the battery life is. That was part of my reasoning to get a netbook because they generally are much better than the average...

Converting mains current draw to 12v

Why use a 240/12 volt inverter in the first place? It is more efficient to use a 12/19 DC volt inverter, there are plenty of them about. I stopped using a laptop and use a netbook which is rated at 40 W as opposed to a 65 W laptop. A lot of people now only use Smartphones, Ipads etc these days.

Converting mains current draw to 12v

If you put an Ammeter in the circuit you will see what the draw is. I have just had a look on the Maplin website but they no longer seem to sell the Car Current Tester. It is a really useful bit of kit. You remove the blade fuse in the circuit you are checking, put that fuse into the tester and...

240 volt socket surge protectors 2 way ?

If it is only 1 double socket then fit an inline surge protector before the socket. They cost between £5 and £10 but some are only rated at 10 amps max. It should do for most things though. Edit: found a link. http://www.comms-express.com/products/iec-inline-surge-protector/

    Water tank for citreon relay

I am not sure if it is possible on a Citroen Relay but on the Iveco vans it is possible to fit a fuel tank to use as a fresh water tank. Because vans are made in RHD and LHD, this dictates which side the fuel tank is fitted. Just fit another fuel tank on the opposite side, you will need the...

How long should my new van be?

We don't do Europe. One of the reasons is 6 dogs at £30 a pop each way. :( It makes for an expensive voyage. :)
