Thanks John think there is good and bad in all makes to be honest , and all so how you look after them makes a big difference , it's just like many others going out and making the commitment is some thing we hate more than any thing else , but once we get going we just have to get on with it

The BT telephone engineers (the biggest fleet operators in the uk) say the vivaro vans fall to bits, the gearboxes are lucky to last 50,000 miles and always want to swop their vans over to a Ford Transit.

BUT the vivaro's are cheap to buy!

had a crewcab 2.5 vivaro for the past 5 yrs done 75,000mls in it no trouble ,very good fuel ,fast, comfortable car like drive, watch the front wheel alignment ,check the glow plug warning light is'nt on ,it can be a very costly repair ,they tend to snap off if treated cackhanded and an easy job becomes expensive

All vans have their good and bad points. When I was weighing up which van to get I chatted to mates that had owned various vans, salesmen at various 2nd hand van dealerships and read up on the internet about all of the problems associated with each type of van. The net result being that I ended up with even less of an idea which to get as they all sounded like they would explode/collapse/dissolve within nano-seconds of me handing over my cash.

I think the best advice is just give em all a good looking over and a good test drive. A lot of it is down to how they've been driven and serviced (or not).

If moving from a renault master, is there any reason for not simply going for a newer renault master as the vivaro is a step down in size. I'm fairly certain that the renault/vauxhall vans and possibly the sevel vans are the only ones who still galvanize the bodywork these days.

I had an 05 reg Vivaro from new, did over 75,000 and not one thing went wrong with it.

I currently have an 09 Renault Trafic, (special build direct from France) and love it, really well built. It did have an injector problem at 56,000 miles and out of warranty, a known issue. Renault changed them along with lots of other bits and upgraded the engine software, all free of charge!

I think the Vivaro (UK built) was put together slightly better than the Trafic (French built) but they are the same components.

Thinking long term about a new Master, I think Renault stuff is fairly bullet proof, galvanised body, stainless exhaust etc. Also had a Transit from new, quite a bit of rust, no comparison. But the new 2014 Transit looks exceptionally good.

Thanks every one for the comments the one I was looking at was very low mileage for the year but I missed it so back to the drawing board , knowing us we will come back with some thing silly nothing like what we had thought of before , a bargain that will cost a fortune why do we do it ???

Every van built from 2007 onwards was a heap of crap .......... ironically EXCEPT the Ducato (which was only problematic when mated with a motorhome/campervan). I was looking to buy a medium sized van at the time and spoke to lots of owners/operators and did not bother as everyone was having problems with gearboxes and ECU's/electrics mainly. Anything built before then seemed to be OK (generally speaking).

Thing to bear in mind is that people only really pipe-up about problems. They don't really say anything when things are fine.

Just give it a good check over, the same as you would a car. Each van has it's own set of issues that you also need to check up on.

From hazy memory:

Vx/Renault/Nissan were gearboxes and injectors.
Ford/Merc tend to have tinworm issues
Sevel vans tended to be more electrical issues and quite thin panel steelwork.

There is a free site (which i'll try to dig out) which gives a run down of the specific problem areas to look for with each van type/year.

I actually converted one of those for a customer a few years back, what an experience that was especially trying to drive it, surprised one could move with a horse in it.

Anne Daynes

But sure do look cool , can't you just see it with a big V8 ,a side pipe down each side , I dont think it has moved for some time

Ive got a 03 Trafic 32 on the clock when I got it 7 years ago,now 1003k,I think there the same as a Vivaro just a different badge,There a great drive comfy like a car and pretty quick, the only thing I feel they fail on is track rod ends/wishbones,with all the pot holes and speed humps they seem to eat them.If it would warrant me to get another van that size I think I would, but im now looking to downsize to maybe a Transit Connect.

Hi, We have a 2007 Vivaro and have converted her and she is great, good on fuel, nice to drive and very spacious inside. We ply lined her and carpeted inside and we went away 2 weeks ago and weren't cold at all.
