For what it's worth I'd try running it with any extra silencers/filters fitted too IF you've got them fitted... It's possible that restriction to combustion air/exhaust/airflow could be causing a problem with the combustion process. I suffered poor combustion once with a partially collapsed...

It's not the fuel smell I notice.... Its the 'acrid' small of the burnt fuel from modern diesels that getse every time.

Some modern diesels stink to me.... Not of unburnt/burnt diesel but a horrible synthetic smell no doubt down to dpf/cat actions.... However our d2 running on pump diesel is barely discernable as running unless in start up/boost mode.... Smell wise. Thought heating oil/kero was 'supposed' to...

I wouldn't bother pfaffing ....they are designed to run on diesel ... Paraffin/heating oil is 'cleaner' burning than diesel ...though as I've said in my experience a correctly running unit runs clean on diesel .

Same here .....ours sits at a sensible temp to avoid excessive boost runs . And never had an issue with it being sorted up inside some of the worst I used to deal with were ex bt van ones with the hopeless 1 hour timer that never let them get up to temp for long enough ...

Most are unless the user has had them idling for long periods ... Or has had a failing glow pin etc

Make sure you clean it out regularly ....if dust/lint etc builds up ... You may end up with overheating problems and a damaged heater .
