Critique on a Sprinter XLWB Camper plz

The rear overhang on those extra long Sprinters is huge. I would definitely be concerned about so much weight behind the rear axle. Even assuming it's within the weight limits of the 5 Tonne version I still think you'll be affecting handling considerably. I would want to be getting gas, water...

Something a little more Rugged perhaps?

I like that, who needs a van. Tent & camp stove, sorted.

Something a little more Rugged perhaps?

Yes, that would certainly make a very decent MH. In many ways, makes more sense then a Unimog.

Looking for Merc. Vito ... any tips?

Don't understand why they were more prone. Early Sprinters had OM601 & OM602 engines, although the OM602 was heavily revised.

Looking for Merc. Vito ... any tips?

lol, Usually on the olde internet the rumour is the original Sprinter was a rust bucket, and the later ones are better. The one I have as a camper is still well within its warranty period. I'll keep an eye out for the rust.

Looking for Merc. Vito ... any tips?

I never had the pleasure of having a OM602. I wanted one though, lol. Quite a few 207's 307's & 208's 308's. All bought second hand ( as have the Sprinters) some with phenomenal mileage. Never main dealer serviced though, my latest Sprinter is the only one to go to main dealer as original...

Looking for Merc. Vito ... any tips?

I must be lucky, the handful of Sprinters I have had, have all turned out to be as equally reliable as the legendary T1's. True they don't have the same solid feel to them, dashboards in particular, and certainly now there is a lot more to go wrong. Barring my latest Sprinter, all were work...

    Mattresses

A good heavy duty velcro sowed onto covers may stop cushions parting.

Have you seen the Duvalays. I haven't got one, I just have 3" dense foam and I find it very comfortable. I have heard people speak highly of the Duvalay though, not that I'd buy one, but would copy the idea.

Thoughts on these vehicles as a base

I imagine if you intend traveling a lot in Europe the Ford may have advantages with parts/service. Don't see too many LDV's abroad, at least not until you get to Russia, which is full of GAZ's

    New off Road Camper Trailer

Slept very well in roof tent. Loved it while camping, couldn't live with the drop in MPG at anything over 60MPH + it got knocked off on a branch, lol. Went back to ground tent and a Thermarest. :)

New dvla rules ? New van?

Thats not good news. At least your local dealer knows about it, mine didn't have a clue. If you do a fair amount of off roading, the aftermarket firms may be worth a look. Let me know if you need any links. No loss of Merc warrenty.

New dvla rules ? New van?

I haven't re registered mine yet so can't talk from experience, but many here have re registered successfully. I'm sure age and GVW of 5 tonnes doesn't make any difference. If your in the market for a new 4x4 Sprinter, do have a look at the latest VW Crafter 4 Motion, more £ though.
