    Dual Solar regulator/controller?

Have I got this right? You want to change your setup because you have bought a Fan? A Fan (even a large 240 volt one) uses very little power compared to something like a Kettle. Each to his own but I think you are making a Mountain out of a Molehill.

Roof Track system for VW LT/Sprinter Mk 1

If you mount Aluminium on Steel you could get galvanic corrosion. It might be worth thinking about putting something between the two metals.

    pop riveter

A fiddle job of mine years ago was helping out a couple of mates who worked as a sheeting gang on new Industrial buildings. The inner sheets had to be pop rivetted every 300 mm in some instances (something to do with better fire containment). This included the roof ones as well, so I was working...

    pop riveter

Agreed Terry. I have banged home thousands of pop rivets with that type. Your feckin' arm aches like buggery after an 8 hour shift of doing nowt else. :(

Can you use idling engine/alternator as a generator?

I always understood that alternators were 240 volt AC stepped down and rectified to 12 volt DC. Was I wrong to think that?

Can you use idling engine/alternator as a generator?

For a start, I don't have a little toy campervan, I have a proper motorhome. I have storage space, a large garage and a double floor throughout and a payload of almost 1.5 ton (at least I did when I used the turbine). My present van can barely manage 1 ton of payload, so I have had to leave the...

Can you use idling engine/alternator as a generator?

The mistake people make is to stick the turbine on a short pole and attach it to the van. It is their ignorance of turbines that makes them fail. I used a relatively small turbine but had it on a tall mast. It kept my batteries charged quite well. It did not put a huge charge in but if it ran...

Can you use idling engine/alternator as a generator?

This was a problem years ago with Industrial engines (Generators etc.) if they were not doing any work and just idling. It was known as 'wet stacking'. Now that many diesels have a Turbo fitted, it becomes a runaway engine and ends in certain destruction.

Can you power a water heater by using a split charge relay?

Yes, you can heat water using solar power. Buy a couple of large plastic bottles of Pop from a Supermarket (you want the black or dark green bottles). After consuming the contents, fill them with water and put them on your Dashboard in the sunshine. This will work surprisingly well. ps, if the...

Heating the van with the gas hob

Most of us oldies have the above symptoms whether we are in the motorhome or not.

Heating the van with the gas hob

That's not what my CO Monitor thought. The Gas is odourless but the fumes from the flame made it very noticeable. Steve, my current van has the large square top vent and the exhaust pipe is set back a bit from it. It's a poor design in my view and there is not much can be done to improve it...

Heating the van with the gas hob

I have yet to own a van that has the Fridge sealed 100% from the interior. This is usually discovered when a strong breeze is blowing on the side of the van where the vents are. Self builders probably do a better job in this respect than the big manufacturers.

Help with choosing length of van

What a boring thread this is, it is totally devoid of new ideas and creativity. :mad1: If you don't want the length too be too much and you want to be able to stand upright then you need to exercise your little grey cells .......... .......... just like this chap did. :cool1:

Solar panel costs versus running the engine

I have never needed to plug any of my motorhomes into computers either ..... but there again I have avoided buying anything Sevel made that was built after 2007. I don't do major modifications to my vans. What is the point of buying something and finding out it is not suitable for your needs? I...

Solar panel costs versus running the engine

They are not suitable for some motorhome charging systems and can cause problems.

Question on Vans with Caravans built on....

Some of the long term members might remember Lenny who used to be a member on wildcamping. His Brother (or Brother in Law) grafted a Caravan on to a chassis cab body and made a really good job of it. I took a photo of it at Druridge about 6 or 7 years ago but cannot find the photo now. So, it...
