Home Made Back Rack

AuldTam

I came across a Thule Easybase on EBay and thought it a clever idea and it would be perfect to chain my generator onto but the price put me off. Then I came across a Bak Rak which was a little cheaper but still expensive. I watched a video on YouTube but didnt like the easy On easy Off idea very much, it would be easy Off for a thief too. So I though that I could make a better stronger one myself, here's my effort.

Well it takes a bit more effort to bolt on but the same applies for someone taking it off..I can chain the generator to it and also run the chain through the towbar...I reckon it would be just too much hassle for a thief and they would walk away. As you can see I drilled two holes either side for padlocks/chains/tiedowns.

Hi nice looking job pity your using it to carry a generator.
How do we stand legally using home made racks etc I considered making a similar rack to carry a motorcycle but wonder about insurance if it's not CE stamped or similar as insurance companies will use any get out clause

I wont be carrying the genny on it whilst driving...it's for chaining the genny on during use and overnight as they can smell a bit if you bring it inside the van after using.

Not sure about the legal aspect...roof racks and towbars are a modifications that people frequently forget to inform their insurer about.

Using it's worst than carrying it I've been parked up and had to move away when some one started theirs up near by

@ *******...Yes, chain runs through towbar too.

witzend..It's a pretty quiet genny but I wouldnt use if I was parked up close to anyone...Split charge system keeps my aux battery charged up and I can live of the 12v easily enough for a weekend.

Greeting and well done on your rack.

A few years ago I made me self one to.

Criteria was, easy drop on and off.

Fold up flat when travelling, don't want to back into anyone.

Thirdly, cheap.

So here's my two penneth for what its worth, made some while ago for my Kontiki.

As it was for another model, I designed it so the numberplate could be seen through the frame.

Can't be bovered to alter it, just stick a board on the back.

Cost about a fiver all in, been very usefull when bringing home large stuff that won't fit inside. ( dog, nagging wife,.... wallet?.... Nahh>)

Hi tranivanman, Just got to much backlog to tackle any more jobs.

Has to be something that I'm really interested in, to do anything else.

Got a full time man working for me, for the last 6 years, and the work still piles up faster.

But its funny, as you get older it takes so much longer to get jobs done.

Gladly help with sizes etc, if you want to have a go yourself.

One word of warning though, The local copper says that if it isn't type approved nowadays.

It invalidates your insurance. Nothing can now be added to a vehicle that isn't.

That's why trailers have to have a plate on them I suppose.

I have read similar last week on the net, yet another load of bureaucracy.

I live in a small place not many people to nick, Got booked a couple of years ago myself for not having a current MOT,

on the wifes car which was 2 and a 1/2 years old. He said he'd just been on a top up course, and thought it was right.

Kept me there for 3/4 of an hour while he checked. He was so pleased he was right, expected me to be pleased for him as well.

It leaves a nasty taste when he wasn't sure, so how was I supposed to know.

The point he had me on was , When I bought the car I had it MOT tested. What a good cheap way of going all through it? I thought.

Little did I know that when you have a vehicle MOT'd, you must keep it up thereafter.

If you do want info, mail me with your email address, only to glad to help.

Rgd's Graham.
