    You cause more strain pushing a clutch diaphragm in than any drag on a layshaft doing nothing other than turning a ball race, clutch in is a old school thing that d instructors told you so you would not jump forward if started in gear.

    The cable should be under the panels, and best way through the roof is a boat deck gland, the black plastic type are good, mount it also under a panel away from sun and rain.

    You can get a plastic which to all looks the same as wood, many boatbuilders use it as no damp effect, even curves and shaps can be got, seen it on the net years back but dont ask who or where, but it is out there, should have been a poet me, feck all use at anything else.

    Many dont also charge the starter battery, the votronic models do.

    No solar panels are £1 a watt, so a 100w panel will be max £100, a good mppt votronic regulator will be about £125 ish, and two panels of about 100 to 125w each will charge 2 batteries of any type.

    I have a switch on the dash to connect all batts up using a 200ah relay, my solar control unit is a votronic split charger, 1 ah to starter from 200w solar panels.

    Problem with them is you should not turn them off for a half hr after turning on, and they use 3 times the current to start them, not as good as you think.

    Voltage on goods works safe within 220v to 240v, but the middle ground is where we are at today, 230v.
