  1. Votronic

Right, noted. Mind you, I don’t suppose it’s worse than the EBL fitted in my current van - seems very fragile to me. I had been attracted to Victron stuff, liking the idea of integrated solutions for control and monitoring, but didn’t think they did a b2b charger. But I just came across this...
  2. Votronic

Hi If you want a single box to do mains, solar and B2B charging, and trickle charge the vehicle battery, I can’t find much to beat this fella: https://www.12voltplanet.co.uk/votronic-vbcs-12v-triple-charger-45a-dc-to-dc-30a-mains-350w-solar.html Quite expensive and all eggs in one basket, I...
  3. battery sizing

Thanks - the two graphs, middle and bottom, do stack up: the Victron overhead is around 15% according to a table I've seen somewhere, so 1,724W + 15% = 2,025W - more or less matching the 2,141W shown. So it's your estimate of 22AH which seems anomalous, doesn't it? Never mind, I think we've...
  4. battery sizing

    Umm, isn’t 22Ah at 12V equal to 264W used in 5minutes, whereas shouldn’t a 2kw hob, running for 5 minutes consume 166W? Am I missing something?
  5. Propex v Whale

Wonder why they say they only sell the underfloor ones to manufacturers and not us converter people?
  6. Propex v Whale

£50? Blimey. What a bargain. The money saved could soundproof it!
  7. battery sizing

Not according to the person who wields the tools....
  8. battery sizing

That’s really interesting. Thanks for doing it, As you say, a big difference. And although there is obviously a cost to buying a third battery, it needn’t be 50% more to get a lot of the benefit: 3 x 90Ah would be significantly better than 2 x 120ah for example and not as much as 50% extra.
  9. battery sizing

Yep, that was the one. Not knowing that vital piece of info about 10.8V being the absolute minimum, I'd looked at a middle row. So, yes, with my two batteries supporting 95A each for 5 minutes, and sticking to the 1.8V/cell row, we're in the 20 minute territory and therefore 25% discharged...
  10. battery sizing

Thanks both - yes, I've factored in the 50%, plus, because the target is for summer off grid use, some solar. On that basis calculated capacity is about 120-130Ah, doubled up to about 240Ah. What's the FV parameter quoted in the Leoch stuff? Is the the final voltage of a cell immediately after...
  11. battery sizing

I hope I've got this right... I've been sizing the battery bank for my hopeful build and reluctantly gone away from all-electric (winter heating...) so it's a more conventional load calculation. Before I started I thought it was mostly about straight Ah capacity, but I now realise it can also...
  12. Automatic?

The only autos I’ve seen second hand have been breakdown low loader trucks. No idea why it’s thought good for that use though.
  13. Propex v Whale

I’ve been looking at space heaters. Am I right in thinking there’s a tie up between Whale and Propex? The underfloor heaters look almost identical (even to sharing model numbers) and the internal ones are amazingly similar, just slightly different physical size. Are they one and the same...
  14. Re-sale value

This is what we’ll all be driving https://www.ford.co.uk/future-vehicles/new-transit-custom-phev
  15. Re-sale value

I see. Agree about just getting the pleasure from it - people told me years ago that a good quality Motorhome (bought, not self built) would hold its value but that’s not my experience so far! I guess it’s not as bad as sailing, once described as akin to tearing up £10 notes in the shower - but...
  16. Re-sale value

Thanks... so broadly speaking its resale value when “new” is about the same as the cash you spent on it. Your time is verging on being free, so to speak. Interesting, thanks
  17. Van or maxi van

Interesting. Is that hard-won experience? Just that we want to keep to 6m if we can so it's a bit nimble. Are you saying the extra 300mm is really worthwhile?
  18. Re-sale value

I'm thinking hard about our self-build: I've the makings of a design and a budget. Like most budgets, it's more than I thought at the start - so be it. But I was wondering about re-sale value. This could be our last van, seeing us well into our 70s when realistically something might happen to...
  19. Parker’s van reliability figures

Two possibilities: either so bad didn’t even make top 10, or just not included. It says it’s the views of the country’s “top 50 leasing companies” so you’d think it would include findings about the Ducato and Iveco.
  20. Van or maxi van

I’m trying to find out exactly what the differences are between Fiat/Peugeot van vs maxi van. I know the maxi chassis is for the heavier duty vans, but the 3.5t L3H2 seems to be available in both varieties. Are there any subtle differences? Payload on the maxi 3.5t is marginally worse, so does...
