  1. Shunt location

    Thanks. Informative as ever...
  2. Shunt location

Right, so when you see schematics that have some negatives connected on the battery side, they are wrong - if there is a shunt involved. You often see people say things like “I took the negative right back to the battery”. I guess that’s fine so long as they are not using a shunt. Or if you...
  3. Shunt location

I’ve been staring at the attached drawing for about 30 minutes and wondering about it. (The drawing is a crop from a schematic on the Victron site, but the principle applies to other makes). My schematic was subtly different: I had one logical negative busbar (actually two physical components...
  4. Bit of encouragement needed

Well, it’s a nice square shape! Good luck with that....
  5. Bit of encouragement needed

No-one mentioned immersion in a water bath on that other thread about how to remove your rear view mirror...
  6. How do you remove a rear view mirror screen mounting?

One of the many things I love about this site is the richness of the debate. Where else would you get a sensible conversation about the relative merits of blow torches and piano wire on your windscreen? Brilliant...
  7. Victron defeat....

Great! Sorted then. Thanks very much. I’ll start saving up....
  8. Victron defeat....

Wow, thank you. That is helpful. My preliminary kit list includes a Victron MPPT, a Multiplus and the new Orion-Tr DC-DC Charger, so the easiest would be to get 1 x VE.Bus Bluetooth Smart Dongle (for the Multiplus), the other two are Bluetooth ready, so I can use Connect. £45 and I'm done. But...
  9. Victron defeat....

Try as I can, I just can't get my head around all the VE.xxx stuff: VE.Bus, VE.Direct, VE.Can - and what the hell is nmea2000 ? I can't find a simple description of how these bits are supposed to work together - or not - despite trawling the Victron stuff. Anybody know a link to a 'Noddy goes...
  10. Bit of encouragement needed

Yes, it’s the challenge thing that motivates me. I think I can do it, but there’s only one way to find out... Thanks for the war stories. Much appreciated!
  11. Bit of encouragement needed

Thanks for the encouragement all. Much appreciated. And an excellent point about saving the knees!
  12. Bit of encouragement needed

I’ve been thinking about a build for several months now, but I’m wondering how physically demanding it might be. I’m 64 and pretty agile and mobile, with reasonable practical skills, but I have a condition that means I get tired quickly: any build is going to take a long time.... I have a chum...
  13. Acrylic or glass windows

Love those big windows! Fantastic ...
  14. Upgrade

Encouraging, I’ve spent about 2 months so far and keep coming across things I hadn’t thought of.
  15. Acrylic or glass windows

Just mulling over the choice between bonded glass and double glazed acrylic windows. The glass ones are attractive and potentially cheaper, but I’ve read they are colder to the touch, not surprisingly. Do people find condensation a potential problem with them, like it is on the windscreen?
  16. Truma Therme, the answer to our prayers if we have blown air

Really? No, I haven’t checked so that’s a good shout. Especially as now I come to think of it, I did notice that shutting a couple of vents seemed to make little difference to the ones we sit near, which is consistent with a leak somewhere! Thank you! Why didn’t I think of that...
  17. Truma Therme, the answer to our prayers if we have blown air

No offence at all! I'd wondered about our installation... if we do not have the hot water heating on, just the hot air, it takes ages (over an hour) for any significant water temperature to be reached. And certainly for the first 15-20 minutes (when you're at your coldest from being outside) our...
  18. Truma Therme, the answer to our prayers if we have blown air

Yes, but we find it a bit frustrating. We only need hot water once or maybe twice a day, but having to heat it means less energy goes into room heating when you want a quick blast. Overnight it’s good - you have a kind of storage heater under one of the seats. In my lovely, shiny, perfect new...
  19. Truma Therme, the answer to our prayers if we have blown air

Yes, agree - made me reluctantly think about gas again
  20. Truma Therme, the answer to our prayers if we have blown air

Maybe it's just my setup, but I'd be surprised if the hot air coming out of my Combi 6 would make much of a fist at heating up water.... It's nice to feel it on your toes in the morning but it'd take an age to get any volume of water hot, I would have thought.
