Well I’ve gone & bought our next van.. although it’s not a van yet!

I’ve always applied to the dvla for our conversation to be regarded as a motor caravan, but it’s such a lottery whether they will or won’t!. I’ll do the same with this one... but it doesn’t matter to me what the dvla want to call it! I build it to what works for us I’m certainly not jumping...

No I’ve not looked into changing the body type… I don’t think I’ll even bother trying to have the dvla reclassify it…. Although il inform them..

It’s a bodge really! I’ve just screwed a couple bits of wood to the sleepers as stoppers and then lashed the ladders to them! ! I’m very good with rope and lashing, even if I do say so myself.

Well I’ve gone & bought our next van.. although it’s not a van yet!

So we’ve passed the momentous stage of fitting the last full sheet of ply.. All the insulation and ply lining is now done.. the rear wall was the hold up, as we had to wait for the rear window box. I have built a slide out bike rack, which just fits under the bed, the bed base is now in and...

Well I’ve gone & bought our next van.. although it’s not a van yet!

Evening…. Phil. we chose the iveco daily 7.2 ton chassis cab, so I wouldn’t have to worry too much about weight. I know it will have a bearing on fuel consumption but after our vario at 20 mpg. I’m hoping we’ll see some improvement! My carpentry is fantastic and I find making cupboard doors &...

Well I’ve gone & bought our next van.. although it’s not a van yet!

We have had a good couple of weeks on the build. Now got all but one ( the rear ) of the windows in. Finished the ply panelling, again except the back wall, as we‘er waiting on the bay window tray. Liz went up on the roof and first coated the aluminium with an etching primer. I’ve built the...

Well I’ve gone & bought our next van.. although it’s not a van yet!

Well the weather’s been better the last couple of days…. So we’ve managed to get some windows in. This truck is the first time I’ve worked with a aluminium bodied vehicle & it’s such a pleasure to work with, & of course having flat walls makes it so much easier. Luckily we had a couple of...

    Sticky solar panel

I’m totally sure that the modern adhesives are fantastic when used properly in the right environment & within there operating parameters, but as so much of a self build is on the hoof for me I’m much happier with a mechanical fixing... sickaflex for the sealing around the holes 👍 Then I can...

    Spray foam insulation.

We’ve done something similar.. but I’ve attached 2x2 timber to the side of the steel frames and screwed the ply up to that.

I don’t see the need for the stick pins. Our kingspan is wedged into place and I’ve gripfilled it to the panel just for good measure.

Fiat Ducato Low Loader Conversion Project

Our cab wasn’t connected to the body at all. There‘s only about 50mm gap. all I’ve done is screw some wood to the inside of the cab and the outside of the box, leaving the 20mm gap between them. I then cut some 5mm rubber/neoprene into strips and fix one piece to the body and then another...

Fiat Ducato Low Loader Conversion Project

Well tbh this is the first time I’ve converted a luton/box van & have no experience of it. but I’ve been told that the box & cab move differently from each other! & if you have a solid connection between them it will rip apart over time? Apparently something about the cab being mounted on...

Fiat Ducato Low Loader Conversion Project

Hi pmnewross. Did you cut through from the box to the cab, Or was it already a walkthrough? iv just done the cut through in our van and have fitted a flexible joint, now I’m just wondering how much difference in movement there is between the cab & box? You’ve done a very nice conversion 👍..

Well I’ve gone & bought our next van.. although it’s not a van yet!

Flooring now screwed down, on top of the insulation. We’ve put in one skylight going to put the ceiling up tomorrow.( if the solar panels arrive in time..) After working on panel vans in the past, this aluminium is a pleasure to work with, & flat square sides & ceiling makes it very simple.

    Spray foam insulation.

cheers Duckato. As we have completely flat walls & ceiling I’m going to use the kingspan like stuff. I’ll try the flooring adhesive to stick it in place. Although the ply will hold it against the wall, pretty well once screwed in. 👍
