The damnable DVLA are at it again!!

For many a long year I have been a subscriber to the Classic & Sports Car magazine because of my almost from the cradle interest in “classic cars” of which over the years I have owned a few, however back to the title of this post “the damnable DVLA are at it again”.

The October issue of the magazine has an article detailing how it is now being quite widely reported by owners of slightly more modern from the mid 50’s onward how the DVLA are refusing to allow the owners keep the original V5 document and registration numbers as something about the vehicle is not quite as it left the production line, the result of this is the imposition of a ‘Q’ plate which means of course that these vehicle owners will once again have to start paying VED once again and worst, their values will be massively devalued!!

Several of these vehicle owners have taken their grievances to court and have lost because the DVLA is immovable on the subject.

There was even one case of someone bringing in a totally matching numbers Alfa Romeo GTV from the 1960’s into the country from South Africa, yet despite it being of proven matching number status, the DVLA refused to issue an age related number plate.

So for the countless thousands of mk1 Ford Escorts, mk1 Cortinas or Capris that started life with humble 1100cc or 1300cc engines that have had them replaced with far higher performance motors, totally different suspension etc. etc., there would appear to be a chance that they will all have to be re-registered as Q plated cars with their owners once again having to pay VED.

And it isn’t only cars but motor bikes as well, so all those Bitsas, Tritons etc. etc. out there their owners need to keep a look out for the dreaded DVLA inspectors!!

No doubt the only way of stopping this stupidity is for the Government to start rapping some DVLA knuckles!

WEll known that any alteration from production line, ie big engines or 5 speed g boxes will not be allowed, things like s belts retro fitt will be ok.

When is a classic , not such in quite a few cases, they have a point maybe ?
Yes but when an accredited matching numbers car is brought into the UK from, for instance Australia or South Africa, and the damnable DVLA refuse point blank to give it a date related reg. no., then it does raise the question as to why they are taking this stance? Personally I believe it is in the main HM Treasury lead because they want the income of the annual VED.

I'm having a 1943 BSA M20 inspected next week and they insist that it must be running.
Many classic bikes have no internals as they will never be ridden again just in case they go bang!

Why not use such a great classic bike, after all with modern oils and careful maintenance they can be made to run sweatly almost forever?

Just around the corner from where I live is a family who are all, in the nicest possible fashion, as nutty as fruit cakes and have several M20's, I even believe they have one left in standard road going condition https://www.facebook.com/groups/562612107835383 At the last count they had 45 somewhat wacky bikes, cars, trucks and heaven knows what else

In the hands of the DVLA, lets hope I get my age related plate.
Engine not run or even the lights checked!
All that effort for no reason, I could have done it at my leisure.
Wouldn't take it on the road until it's finished and then the first trip would be to MOT it.
Yes I know, but that's the way I am.
