LUCAS Isolator - What's the story

This relates to a Talbot Express and I am unsure whether the Lucas Isolator shown was in the original van when it left the factory is added afterwards.
I have also posted this in the TE Facebook group here

Once before I posted about a LUCAS Isolator switch
There is one on steering column of Van.
There are VERY thick HT Leads going back to it. Both +ve and -ve by the looks (black and red). I took it out of housing but forgot to take a picture (DOH).
Have not completely traced back the wiring but does not seem to ISOLATE anything in terms of electric flow from leisure battery to rear of van. Or electric flow of Engine battery to front of van.
Friend suggested that possibly the LUCAS switch isolated alternator from leisure battery when you start the van so that there is not extra load on engine battery when starting.
Any other ideas as struggling to fully trace cabling...??
