Morning,

Anyone purchased from 'Tanks Direct' ? Wondering about quality as price seems excellent. Your thoughts on the need for baffles in a small tank such as the one in the link which is the one that suits my needs. Ty

I would think of that as a jerry can and a half on it's side. So no baffles.
I'd preferer a drinking water tank to be made in food grade white or natural nylon. You'd just need to keep it in the dark.

Black tanks are available but I plan to box this but want to keep a water level window so wanted translucent. I'm sure somewhere the website said their tanks are for potable water but you are correct that it doesn't state it on that page. Will check.

In 30 years we have never drunk water straight from any motorhome/caravan water storage, we always boil the water first i.e. tea or coffee, on occasions my wife will boil the water then let it go cold for drinking if we run out of water from tap water held in a bottle. I'm sure that if storage tanks and pipes are cleaned chemically on a regular basis it would be fine to drink straight from the motorhome tap,(But who does that?) having been involved in sailing and owning a yacht for years I am aware that water is drinkable for months if kept in the dark but even so I personally will not take a chance unless it became life or death and let's face it, the way we all use our vans you are never far away from purchased Bottled water or a potable tap so drinking from the tank is not necessary and in my view a dodgy practice. I don't know about the company in question.
'Millie' has fresh and waste tanks as supplied cy CAK tanks and CAK is a suitable description of the company when it comes to customer service!!

Arguably the most respected supplier and manufacturer of tanks in the self build market it Shaun Barratt at Barratt Tanks http://www.tank.me/, but his tanks are I believe all bespoke when it comes to the filling and emptying points.
I would have used him myself but at the time when I needed the tanks my van wasn't road worthy and this is something I deeply regretted!

As for fresh drinking water, we always carry a 5ltr. bottle of fresh water which we can easily refill at any available tap.

I tried the once but got a really awkward crick in my neck :p

I have no hesitation in using the water for tea or cooking, but don't drink it otherwise - but really only as I don't tend to drink water anyway (I very rarely have a drink from the house tap either).
What are you thoughts on using the tap water when brushing teeth? that is only a very close step away from drinking out the tap, is it not? or do you use bottled/boiled water for that?

Curious to that part as until my current Motorhome with its 100L fresh tank, I have used campers with portable water containers of no larger than 25L that I can see in and wash out so on those I have not had any concerns.

I drink water from tank. Tank is only 40 or 50 litres (can't remember) so water isn't in it for long, and as tank is positioned by sliding door, it's so easy to rinse out and drain every few fillings.

A few years back, we took our sailing boat through the French canals to the Med and then back via Biscay and the Channel Islands. Drank straight from the tank all through the trip and, apart from the difference in taste, had no problems at all.
It was a small tank and was filled whenever we got the chance, so probably no chance for the water to 'go off'.

Its WRAS approved polymer which is good enough for me

I have around 300l of drinking water in a food grade stainless tank. The remaining water is dumped before any trip and replaced with fresh. Once a year the tank is sterilized. Along with the plumbing.

They are the tanks I have, best decision I took on water tanks, saw them first on commercial conversions at shows and got his phone number off a tank at a show. He does do various inlets and outlets according to your needs, but specialising in Sevel vans and I believe Ford transits he delivers the whole package hangers, pipe fitments and taps to empty the tanks waste and fresh, although I found the taps to be a bit crap so after two years I swapped them out for gas, levered type ball taps. He's very helpful but at the time six years ago was very busy, about a year ago my son bought the waste and fresh water kit from him for his sevel 290 conversion. He sends by currier by the way. I drink tank water no problem, mainly in hot drinks but I also dilute cordial. My van is in constant use though so water is never really standing. I do drink from 5,tr bottle I refill and 25ltre plastic drums but that’s to extend the time I can go before refilling
Do what makes you happy, after cleaning through of course 👍

I watched a youtube video which had what I thought was some good advice.... use a couple of litres of vinegar when cleaning the fresh tank. vinegar being a food stuff is perfectly safe to injest so any residue left will have no adverse effects other then to taste, unlike some other cleaning chemicals.
seemed sensible to me :)

+1 for wydale, really good quality. Unlike the fiamma tanks it is possible to cut holes anywhere and get an easy seal.

While I was at Autogas I heard Barrat tanks being recommended a lot. Don’t know if that’s how it’s spelt though. I can get more info if anyone wants it and can’t find by that name

Most self builders I have ever heard of who have used Barrat tanks will say the quality and service is brilliant.
Like the totally impatient prat that I am, Shaun Barrat wasn't able to make the tanks I wanted fast enough for my schedule so I bought CAK tanks and cak is exactly what they have proved to be!!
