waeco cr50 earth wireing

philgb

Any of you self builders have experience installing/wiring a waeco cr50 fridge

Have the live sorted with 6mm 30 amp cable on a 4 metre run direct to leasure battery bank via 15 amp fuse

But looking at different forums some say run the negative to a near chasis earth others take it back to the leasure battery?

My thoughts are, if I take the neg cable back 4 metres to the battery instead of a near chasis earth it would make the cable run a total of 8 metres? Which by the installation guide would mean using 10mm cable.
Any insite would be helpful
Cheers

I like to take all my negatives back to the same earthing point direct from the leisure battery at the point that I also connect the leisure battery to the chassis but can't see a problem with a good earth to the chassis elswhere, assuming the leisure battery is also earthed to it.

What he said..

I went with a single common earth point near the leisure battery. But some people go with multiple earth points.

Running the earth cable back to the leisure battery will result in an 8 metre run, with the resultant voltage drop, so in that respect earthing it close to the Waeco is more efficient. Waeco fridges, and I'm sure other makes as well, are quite sensitive to voltage, and will show a fault if it's too low.

I think the main reasons many self builders use a single earth point is simplicity and it makes finding an earth fault easier. Like most car manufacturers, I use multiple earth points. It's neater, more efficient and cheaper, as a lot less cable is needed.

Thanks Guys, the Waeco is apparantly sensative to voltage drop, so will try a local earth point to the fridge first and monitor performance etc.

Thanks again it's good to bounce ideas around

they are excellent fridges and I'm sure you will be happy with it I think they perform way better than the modern three way fridges on offer

I used to have a portable chest type 3 way - what a waste of time it was. OK, it did keep things cold, but they are so big, and need to be level when running on gas. Waeco CoolFreeze models will work at angles of up to 30° and the cabinets are much smaller and being very efficient, they use very little power.

Sorry but that is not correct. If either the positive or negative cable is longer than necessary, and/or of inadequate gauge for the load, then the voltage drop will become excessive ...

I have the Waeco CR 50 in my van, and I wanted it off the floor (fed up of bending down to use fridge) so I positioned it above the electric cupboard, so my wires were very short, and the fridge works beautifully. Three way fridges are fine if they are installed correctly, and its surprising the number that are not. In my donor van, I got serious draughts through the fridge vents, and that could carry carbon monoxide from the fridge exhaust, plus the area at the back of the fridge was disgustingly dirty, and there was dry rot as well.
