I see there’s talk about the forum being quiet etc. Well, as a newbie here feeling my way around I guess it’s up to the likes of me to throw in some new content.
The van isn’t far off being finished now. But, before I show it off to the world (ie this forum!) I should give you a bit of background into the van’s conception.
For years I’ve had VW transporters, always part of life even if in the background. While living abroad for quite a few years I kept a T2 Devon pop top in a pals barn and would come back to the uk in the summer and set off in it for a month. Later a couple of T25s and then a couple of T4s. Had it not been for the onset of a bit of arthritis in my hip, I’d still have a a transporter I guess.
Anyway, both the T4 camper and my beloved T2 both got sold on to new homes. I sold the T4 for £6k and decided that this would be my budget for a big van....

About this time a friend was selling his xlwb sprinter. He’d bought it new and done 83,000 miles as a carpet fitter. How could I resist? I’ve no idea if the van was cheap or expensive at £2500, seemed okay and left me with £3500 to do any repairs and converting. I was determined to build as cheap as possible, use as much as I could of materials that were in the shed and lastly, build what I want without any thought of future value.
I suspect we have all spent many hours, day, weeks and months pondering layout and design. I’ve always maintained that you have to have two lists of specifications. These are tradable and non tradable specifics. My non tradable item was a fixed king sized bed, I’m 6’4” and don’t want to start building furniture when I want a kip! So, 50% of the huge van is bed. A waste of space for some, a must for me. The rest of the van is what you need for living. It’s also got 200w of solar, a couple of 110w batteries, a 12v compressor fridge, a shower room and a thetford chemical karzi.
It’s made partly from junk and what was collecting dust in the corners of the shed, make of it what you will. The other thing, it wasn’t going to be grey with grey. No fancy expensive lightweight ply or tambour doors.

And the budget? I calculated it had gone over £7000, then recalculated and realised I had forgotten how to add, it’s at about £6400.

As it’s now 12:40am there’ll be no pics until tomorrow! I know, I’m being a tease, but it is dark out there!

I haven’t done a conversion, my mind says I want to but my body says keep on wanting so I am in a coachbuilt lol. Your groundwork sounds good, I am much shorter but felt the same and went with a fixed bed. Never regretted that choice once and had van over two and a half years now. Mine is also Sprinter base and never regretted that either.
I am impatiently waiting for pics 👍

So, there you go, the Beast in all her glory! The overhead lockers in the bedroom ripped out of an old caravan. Shower room not finished, hence no photo. Cooker just stood in place, will be secured. Cushions still awaiting their covers. There’ll be a curtain between the hab and the cab. Floor will be blue carpet tiles.
Not everyone’s cup of tea, I know. It’s going to be a user, I won’t care if it gets chipped or marked.

Great job, love it. 👍

That extra metre and a bit over the MWB really makes a huge difference, so much space.

Sounds good to me, just as long as you were able to get rid of the dreaded tin munching monster that came with all Sprinters....

As you have been on other forums, you might have come across a certain infamous mr brown who has done more very low budget conversions than most people have had hot dinners, although it sounds like Nigel has finally stepped back from his exploits these days, but as he has done Sprinters, if you ever get stuck, he might be a worthwhil person for you to consider asking.

Keep up the good work

Thanks folks. Yes Phil, you may recall that I replaced both cab doors and the slider as they were both going soft at the bottom. One back door also had some rot, but welded that up as I couldn’t find a replacement at sensible money. Also found a bit of rot in the nearside sill just in front of the back wheel, so cut it out and replaced the whole panel. The guy at the garage was under it a couple of weeks ago and commented on how clean it was for a thirteen year old sprinter! It’ll no doubt outlast me....

Just seen your pictures, and I can see we are on very similar wave length. Hopefully I will get to have a proper look at it in the not too distant future, still got a lot to do to finish mine so I can get the pictures together and see if DVLA class it as a Motor Caravan or some other obscure classification. Good luck with the dvla, there doesn’t appear to be any rhyme or reason to their decision making these days. Us mere mortals must bow to the unquestionable daftness that is ‘what exactly is a motorcaravan in the eyes of the dvla? I wish they’d tell us!
Good luck with the rest of your build, looking forward to seeing the finished art. My next step is softening the van up with upholstery and trimmings and internal decoration.

The principle seems to be to send request to DVLA, it comes back rejected with the reason that it does not look like an Motor Caravan externally and becomes a "Van/ Side Windows"
But that rejection note is actually useful - it means that Insurance Companies, who used to insist on a reclassification but know what is happening with DVLA, will accept that note as you doing all you could to meet the normal criteria and will insure you as a Camper just as if it were reclassified :)

Is there a concern that they could use that rejection as reason not to pay in event of a claim
