Stixall tips... I don't want to come unstuck!

Sorry for the terrible pun...

I'm about to stick on 4m of awning rail to the side of my van, and 2x1m of alluminium box section to the fibreglass roof of my converted ambulance.

So:

Clean everything thoroughly...Meths/ panel wipe/ acetone?

Sand the ally, and the roof to provide a decent key

Use spacers to give the correct thickness of adhesive and apply bead, press and pray?

It's an old van, so I'm not precious about cosmetics, but I really don't want to cock it up and lose an awning or solar panel!

I'm pretty happy with what to do, but any nuggets of wisdom would be appreciated, especially what to use regarding spacers.

Many people have fitted various external items using only adhesive and have never experienced problems. Personally I think modern adhesives are brilliant, but would want to add mechanical positive fixings as at the end of the day the "glue", whilst very good could possibly fail under certain unforseen conditions. Just my own thoughts. Geoff.

Just like Geoff, over the years I have known of numerous people who only use Stixall (or similar) to attach quite heavy items and have lived to tell the tale, but as far as I can recall, I have never read of anyone trying to attach a weighty item such as an awning rail, even if it is mechanically spaced so as to ensure the strongest possible level of adhesion.

Most people are only talking about gluing on solar panel feet which is a totally different kettle of fish, but an awning rail mmmm I think not.

So as Geoff so wisely suggests, yes use Stixall spaced to achieve the highest level of strength, but also use some mechanical form of adhesion as well.
