self build window bus windows!

artcush

Hi,i am a Newbie converting a large transit bus (because, cheap&full service history/low miles, before you ask,i have to keep reminding myself.) On both sides i will be removing the windows and sheeting over with ally bonding to ally:idea:,nowerdays i think this is done by bonding as opposed to pop rivets. Any suggestions as to which products would be suitable? This is a big job so its too expensive to cock up!

Sikaflex... but if it got an Aluminium frame then pop rivet and Sikaflex

What type of windows are they? If they're Sietz then follow the instructions on thewebsite

Thanks Baloothebear, i will save up and fit Sietz and follow there instructions, bolt in etc .This is to fill in the huge holes with aly sheet, bonding it to
the van sides.Because of the cost of the windows i need to get it right, otherwise i may open a window on the motorway one rainy day and see
the sides of my van flapping! Sikaflex 255 fc i think is primerless windscreen adhesive,(looks as if its for bondond glass to steel) most windows put
in this way now. Will have to check if it glues aly to aly? or other stuff? regards.

If you want good looks, consider bonded windows. They stick straight in the hole and give a factory finished look.

Seitz have the double glazing and the blinds but look poor from the outside as they don't fill the whole panel and scream at aftermarket conversion. Plain bonded are cheaper than Seitz but opening ones may work out similar.

(Sikaflex 512 is good - bonds anything!)

Why not just Vinyl wrap the glass to match the van, much cheaper

what we used in the trade was a product called "tiger seal" , body shops use it for fixing panels where welding is not possible for various reasons, personally I would also rivet the point being you will not be able to apply even pressure as it cures on a panel of that size and in that position, it comes in 3 colours, white , black and grey, I carry it as part of my emergency kit
It can be obtained from most motor factors , if they dont carry it they can get it

I've always used double glazed units from a scrap caravan. I could never afford Seitz.

I would suggest welding steel into panels rather than using aluminium when there are "holes" to fill

Tiger Bond is good stuff and is probably more affordable than Sikaflex. Always check the "use by" date on the tubes before buying any bonding epoxy. Some places don't rotate their stock properly :(
