I am looking for a mains backup charger to supplement solar if needed on my 24v battery bank consisting of 4x120ah agm.
This charger looks up to the job and at £190-200 not to bad a buy.

Has anyone used one of these, are they as good as they claim?

I've found the Victron chargers the best I've used, the ability to adjust them to suit the battery exactly has transformed my batteries. Though I'm sure there will be others that do the same. Not forgetting Trevor's Chinese special that he'll be along with soon. ;)

I agree with Mr SQ.
The Victron ones may not be the cheapest available but ....
  1. You can set the parameters precisely as you want them for the Batteries you have
  2. You can configure them with a pretty simple to use Bluetooth app
  3. You can update the firmware to take advantage of improvements by Victron
  4. You have a 5-year warranty backup from Victron
  5. They are effectively silent due to their Passive cooling via heatsink instead of a Fan. Makes a big difference in a camper in the evening/overnight.

Bonus features ...
  • You can set the voltage output at a high voltage if you want to do some serious reconditioning of a battery
  • You can use the Charger as a Power Supply. Handy if you need a 12V (or 24V) supply but don't have a battery handy

Obviously there are a whole load of chargers out there and the majority are cheaper than the Victrons, but for me, the Victron is the best value for money despite being more expensive.

I have not discounted victron, I am aware that many folks including you two rate them highly.
Could you recommend one for my application, the reason I singled the Noco one out was that it states suitable for up-to 500ah battery capacity.

would the blue smart 24-16 be suitable? I don’t know my amp from my elbow 🙄

Just to clarify ...
you said " .... 24v battery bank consisting of 4x120ah agm"
Is that
  1. 4 x 24V 120Ah batteries in parallel? or
  2. 4 x 6V 120Ah Batteries in series? or
  3. 4 x 12V 120Ah Batteries in a combination of Series/Parallel?
I am going to make a guess that it is #3 - 4 x 12V 120Ah Batteries. If that is the case then you would have a 240Ah battery bank.

If it is a 24V 240Ah bank, I would say the IP22 Blue Smart 16A Charger is too small to charge that size. The IP43 Phoenix Smart 25A (1+1) Charger would be a better option but you really want a charger that can deliver 50A at 24V.

oh, the reason I listed the Victron features I did was just to point out it was not some kind of pavlovian response to the word "charger" :)

Yes number three you are correct, so would the 16 amp victron be suitable?

Ok thanks Dave now I know what is required.

No problem I was not trying to ring your bell.🐕

Something that might be worth considering in your installation if you have not got in place ... A 12V Battery Balancer to keep both halves of the 24V bank in sync.
Victron make one of these - https://www.victronenergy.com/batteries/battery-balancer - but they cost around £75 generally.
There is a popular low-cost version called an HA01 that does this job as well - example here - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Battery-...072706?hash=item3b21ad4002:g:wV4AAOSwcXpb4ZVm.

depending on how you have setup the bank (Paralling pairs of Series Batteries, or Series pairs of Paralleled Batteries) you might have to install two or just one.

Yes thanks, you recommended this to me when I installed the batteries and I took your advice then. 👍
