Sent the V5 to the nice man for change of body type from panel van to Motor Caravan , and as many other we were a little apprehensive because of the amount of people that say it can be a night mare to do well all we did was fill in section 7 of the v5 to motor caravan signed and dated it sent it to them with some photos and a small covering letter just saying that I had fitted a under slung 57,ltr fresh water tank and a 25 ltr waste tank and a very basic list of what else we had fitted , toilet ,cooker ,sink , fridge , bed electric hook up , cupboards and set of 6 draws , and sent it off the week before exmas and on the 5th of Jan it came back all done , I suppose it would maybe have made it easier in that the taxation class has stayed the same as it is tax classed as disabled , some worry about the photos they send I will post up the ones I sent as soon as I can to show what worked for us

Congrats, nice feeling when it comes back all changed. Mine didn,t take long either and worried for nothing.
Did you get your photo,s back from dvla as mine have not been returned and it's been weeks.

you don't get your pics back normally
the most important photo should show the back of the van,offside door open showing some of the interior, but the Reg No must be clear on the other door. add about 5 general interior shots and a short letter asking for a change. my theory is don't bore them !

You could send them to all the motorhome owners to look at while they are parked up trying to find out where the water ingress problem is coming from, again.

sorry ment to say that Some one said cant remember who , that if you wanted your photos back you had to send with them a stamped addressed envelope , not sure how true that is , it was some time ago when I had another van , that I never got round to altering ,

Good result, I have always found DVLA ok but very slow, had many dealings with them on commercial vehicle weight issues although not on camper van issues.

I had my pictures back eventually but took about 4-5 weeks for some reason after i had the log book back.

Andy my van is just listed as a Mitsubishi 2.5 with a taxation class "private light good" on the reg doc - would there be any advantage to me to send piccies of it as a van to DVLA to get it re registered as a camper van ? thanks

i once bought a hilux surf in the 90's and a loop hole they used to avoid a sva test was to slide in a kitchen unit with sink, hob, table etc and it was registered as a motor caravan then once you got the v5 you just sent it back to dvla to change it back to a car they were even registering Subaru impreza's as mobility vehicles to avoid the the same sva . If your insurance company are happy that it does not say motor caravan on the v5 then I would leave it

I was only made aware that our V5 needed altering , when I read something on these forums .

The van had been upgraded from 3010kg to 3250 and one day a new plate arrived in the post , from SV . I assumed , wrongly, that they would notify DVLA and expected the paperwork to to turn up.

3 years later, by which time the van maker had gone bust, I read here that the Spanish police were insisting on only accepting the weight on the V5. I contacted SV , who told me that only the registered keeper could contact DVLA. They warned me that DVLA was working to rule because of the expected cuts due to ceasing the tax disc, They sent the necessary paperwork and Advised me to get it in quickly. That was early June . I sent everything in with recorded delivery and kept on checking to see if it had been signed for .

By the end of July, I rang DVLA and , eventually, a nice young lady told me they only sign for the mail as they bring a batch out of storage (!) I told her we were due to leave for our second honeymoon ... a 3 month tour of Europe ,in the van , and asked her if there was anyone I could talk to... " Just a minute , I'll put you through to the department that deals with that ", she said .

I spoke to an even nicer young chap , explained about our, "Golden wedding " , second honey moon. and said we were due to go in 2 weeks . I asked him to imagine if this problem was happening to his parents , how would they feel ?

" Don't worry , My parents are motorhomers, and I had to do exactly the same thing for them .... I'll go and dig out your paperwork and sort it for you. "

Next days post brought the new V5 !
