As a Airconditioning/refrigeration engineer our wholesalers regularly have fridge pipe delivered in wooden 'coffins' 3m or 6m long....
They break down easily into 3m/6m x 200mm x 20mm boards....
Rustic and not always perfect BUT the wholesalers are usually happy for you to take them away for free (costs them to dispose of them)
Tin of chocolate biscuits always helps though ;-)
With some stain or blow lamp finishing they can look pretty good....
I picked some up to make a garden gate the other day...

There must be lots like this that just get dumped, seems wrong when everyone keeps telling us to recycle. Neat job

Sadly your spot on.... Most goes for chipping into plywood or biomass type operations.
Waste really (especially when we can use it)

Most diy builders yards will have wast wood cuts which can also be used for stoves,saw dust which can be handy for oil spillages.

I just chucked a load of lightweight ply away as we're moving and going into storage for a while til we find a new place, shame as it was all unmarked, plus a lot of corner materials as well, I nearly cried.
