Anybody know where I can get my gas system checked and certified?

My insurance states that in the event of a fire or explosion I wouldn't be insured if I hadn't got a gas certificate.

I have spoken to a couple of places and they said they wouldn't want the responsibility of certifying a self build gas system. (It was installed by a qualified gas fitter, but he wasn't MH certified).

It's a bloody closed shop, possibly driven by the likes of the NCC, the UK manufacturers along with their dealers and of course the damnable Caravan & Motorhome Club!

I don't know who you are insured with Rob but I am with Scenic who apart from employing telesales people who actually know about and have an interest in self built motorhomes, they have also (with me at least) had amongst the most competitive quoted prices................. Oh and getting back onto the subject, Scenic have never asked me for a gas certificate. https://www.scenicinsurance.co.uk/

I'm with Marker Study Phil and although they get terrible reviews, I know a few people on WC who have made claims and had no problems.

They never asked me for a certificate, it's something I found in the small print.

I've got a contact for a fitter who has done work for me before, so hopefully he will ring me back soon with a positive result.

Would a gas soundness test be acceptable to your insurance company as this could be carried out by any gas fitter registered to do lpg work.

Not sure.

The fitter I know has just got back to me and he is coming round on Monday. Cost £30.

I think it is quite unusual to have certificates of conformity (or whatever they like to call them) as a requirement of insurance I thought.
Markerstudy is a very common underwriter for Campervans, especially self-conversions, and surely they - or the broker - should have advised you about this if they do need it? (I've been with Markerstudy on two different vans and two different brokers and never been asked about gas certs)
I'll drop a line to a Broker guy I know who specialises in Camper Insurance, using Markerstudy as the most common underwriter and see what he says.

It seems I am wrong!

I've just read through the T&C's and can't find a reference to this anywhere.

I know I have seen it on a previous policy and just assumed it was standard, but that may not have been Marker Study.

I'll dig out some of my old policies tomorrow and see if I can find it.

I am in no way a legal beagle, however I would think that if an insurance company take on the liability insurance of a selfbuild camper/motor caravan they would specifically have to ask for a gas safety cert or copy for their files if it was an inherent regulation to their offer of insurance, or at least be very notable in their small print. If gas safety is a prevalent part of their requirements then surely they should also be asking for electrical safety, build and construction certificate, it then moves to where does it stop. What I must say is if gas installation was that dangerous in self builds the government would have already made it totally illegal for gas to be fitted by uncertified folk, it may yet happen especially if we stay in the EU. Well it appears that Julie has thrown away our old insurance documents.

However, a quick google search shows others (VW forums and Out and about live) have had similar, and this from comfort insurance;

Anyhoo, I will go ahead with the certification as it is only £30 and at least I will know it is sound.

Gas test done and dusted this morning. All sound and certificate issued.

Peace of mind if nothing else.

We have just taken our van to be converted and he offered to get a gas Safe certificate once all is done. Did not realise it was unusual but was comforted that he was sure it would all pass. Insured with AF and wasn't told we would need one.

I am sorry to say that being brokered by that lot, you will be lucky to find one of their tele sales guys who know what day of the week it is let alone any technicality pertaining to a policy!!

Never used AF before but had to get a policy for van being converted. AIB were about £150 more and NFU were ridiculous at just under £500! As we will have one shouldn't be a problem.

I honestly find that talking to any of the tele sales people at Scenic is like a breeze in the park and their rates are very good as well.

Not that I have contacted them @REC but the Motorhome & Self Build Insurance group on facebook might be able to offer you the kind of policy you are looking for: -

Strange how we all have different experiences - I've dealt with AF since I started the conversion and am still with them. Found them to be very helpful and friendly, with really good rates.

i,m with AF seemed a good price van an breakdown cover about 350 did not ask about gas cert but had it pressure tested when i got it bloke found a few problems
