Fiat Ducato Chassis Cab Conversion to coachbuilt motorhome

1st post, thanks in advance for any replies

just a pipe dream at the moment , I've got a 2011 ducato chassis cab currently fitted with a dropside body , it's only done 54k and has been very reliable in the 2 years I've owned it, I've put 30 of the 54k on it

I'm considering winding up the business I used it for so converting it to a motorhome is appealing as it won't be worth a lot as a pickup

Whether this is a caravan graft onto the chassis or as i've been reading cut the chassis off and use one of the bolt on ALKO chassis to make it lower

I don't want to end up with a heath Robinson job that looks a mess, I want it to look like a motorhome, I won't be doing it

As a major cost of a coach built motorhome is the chassis is it feasible to have a body builder put a new body on my chassis or will the cost exceed selling this and buying one of similar age.

As I said it's just a plan at the moment, are there companies that custom build onto a used chassis

I think you can buy the boxes but ones I am thinking of are more expedition vehicles. Seen a few builds where they started with just a chassis on lorry’s and they look real professional but not a motorhome.

I don't know if they do small stuff, but Millard Motor Homes used to put a box on a supplied chassis.

Thanks for the replies , I'll have a look for their website

I've also got a dometic AC unit that's new in the box which is definitely going to be needed if my wife is going in it

I did buy a dirt cheap motorhome a couple of years ago, a 25 year old renault traffic, this guy had spent £1500 having it welded but died before it was completed, the underside looked like new but the top still looked like the bottom must've before the welding started, the family just wanted it off the drive

I drove it home, it got the thousand yard stare from my wife and was on ebay that night

Is this just a road tax issue, just looking on the DVLA website , the body type on mine is flat lorry , it seems an odd decision I won't be able to change the body on the V5C to motor caravan when this is exactly the chassis most of the coach built ones are built on , the dropside body will be coming off

Current body type shown on your V5C registration certificate (log book)

DVLA will only consider changing the body type to motor caravan if the body type shown on your V5C registration certificate (log book) is currently one of the following:

• ambulance
• box van
• goods
• insulated van
• light goods
• light van
• livestock carrier
• Luton van
• minibus
• MPV (multi-purpose vehicle)
• panel van
• specially fitted van
• special mobile unit
• van with side windows

Just a thought, If you are going ahead I am selling full Thetford Standard door kits, doors No`s 3,4,5 EHU point and fresh water infil neck and locking cap, all keys and everything in excellent condition. I put a bit on here about it, Gumtree aswell amongst other places. I know it doesnt fall in with the advice you are asking about but food for thought. G
