Bright yellow extra long Transit

Craigchester

As it says in the title I've got a new project of a van I've had for 3 weeks now. 2010 Ex delivery van. 2.4 ltr Ford Transit with 107k miles on the clock. £3.5k I've never had a Ford. It's had a few scrapes but I'm not worried about cosmetics. Limited to 70mph so has never been ragged and bright yellow, which is a bit much to stomach sometimes but I'll get over it once I've got on with the conversion. I've never done anything like this before and am doing everything myself so am here to make sure I minimise mistakes. I've been all over youtube for inspiration and tips for everything from insulation and vapor barriers to electricory. I was on this site a few years ago or so. I've had a couple of campers, an old 207D merc, loved it. In hard times I used to run it with veg oil (when veg oil was cheap) with a squirt of petrol but the body was falling off the chassis so had to scrap it after 12 years of happy motoring. Then a VW 2ltr air cooled transporter which I hated. Too small, too juicy! I'm cataloguing everything I'm doing so expect regular updates. For now here's a couple of pics of where I'm up to. I put a skylight in yesterday after watching youtube a lot. Black patches on the panels are soundproofing, I've used recycled plastic insulation from BnQ on top of that then I'm going to vapor barrier the whole thing. I'm going to use the existing ply lining for the walls and I've bought a thinner ply for the ceiling to keep the weight down. Pretty much got all the electrics ordered, solar panel kit, fuse box, cut off switch, batteries, carbon monoxide and fire detectors, etc. Not going 240v because the idea is to be totally off grid but that may change! Today i insulated and put vapor barrier on the roof. I'm on a tight budget of just a few hundred quid so this is not going to all get done at once. After my inheritance runs out I'll be on the scrounge again for cheap bits and advice. Look forward to you comments.. sorry for the upside down and sideways pics. yellow update

View attachment 53629View attachment 53630View attachment 53631View attachment 53632View attachment 53633Put an afternoon in yesterday and got the ceiling in and some wiring in through my recycled hose pipe conduit. Apart from new stuff like solar panels, wiring, switches, usb ports, roof panels and skylight I want to use as much recycled stuff as possible as I don't have a bottomless budget. It was only a small inheritance!!! Having a day off today as my workspace isn't available. My skylight fitting isn't perfect as the gap between upper and lower bits are about a centimetre too much so will need a fix on that at some point but i just wanted to get stuff up so I can leave it so I can start the vapor barrier on the walls. Once I get the walls done I can start on constructing a bed, kitchen and living space.

Excellent start, don't forget to show the finished article.

Remember that to get it re-registered as a Motor Caravan to get cheaper insurance. It will need to have at least one side window. I would fit cupboards etc before ply lining for which I would use 3.5 ply if the backing is firm enough. Use the original liner to make the parts of the units with.

Be prepared to be dissatisfied with the layout an want to change it after a year or two.

Hi before you go mad make sure you draw out plans for conversion and work out all the wiring runs for lights etc,as once its all boarded out you are stuck with it,do it once do it right.

Its what I have been thinking about for years so I am pleased to see that someone else is getting off there backside and doing what looks like a good job. May even guilt me into finding a van to do up. :)

everyone does it different. i make window and vent frames, insulate, totally plyline except for a 3'' gap where roof meets wall, rout out windows etc, make cupboards without backs from 6mm ply , then wiring plumbing and gas last. the services go though the cupboards ,along the ceiling gap , and any ceiling lights are an easy feed from there. very last construction job is cover the gap with a removable ply strip .

Thanks to you tube

I'm going for real basic to start with. A bed, a frame for cupboards and sink, I've got a decent 2 burner and grill camping stove. Got solar panels, got a wood burner but not putting it in yet. Thanks though. See pics
