14 months after buying the van I'm finally about to start converting it!

I've used packs of celotex as scaffolding before and its very strong!!

I've been trawling the archives and the web etc and I'm going to with a foam board such as cellotex or ecotherm for the main panels and maybe fill out the doors with loft style insulation. Not sure what thickness to use on the walls though, 40mm?I'll baton out at 30mm on the floor and go with 9mm for flooring, 6mm for walls and I maybe able to reuse what I have with some light repairs and then 3mm for the roof. I'm quite intrigued by these poundland camping mats for the roof insulation. Just stick them to the roof panels but they would need a vapour barrier, right?

Mechanical wise I now have un-seized calipers with new pads up front and a repaired handbrake lever and everything adjusted and seemingly functioning well. Sadly the wipers aren't working now (?) and i need to sort that before I can get it in for an MOT. So frustrating not being able to drive it and check the brakes pull up square etc. But i'll get there eventually. Once its MOT'd that gives me the green light to steam into the conversion process. The enthusiasm is there even if the funds aren't! ;D

I think most camping mats are closed cell (so non-porous) so you may not need a vapour barrier.

Am going to use a couple of layers of camping mat on the doors of mine (once i've finished the rear wheel bracket). Thought I may stagger the inner layer by half an inch to the left so that it acts as a baffle down the gap between the 2 rear doors (if that makes any sense)

if the ply is usable, swap the 2 wheel arch pieces and flip the front bit to the clean side.9mm on the floor, glue the battens on the floor, leave a channel free till the end for services to cross the van,i did write some stuff about furniture somewhere here

Go for 6mm ply on roof and sides 3mm is definately no good.
i used 12 mm for the floor i cant remember the distance i used for the batons but have no movement at all.
I also used 15mm light weight board for all furniture it is pretty expensive but this is what the pros use and keeps the weight right down.

Got 3mm on my ceiling with no problems at all

Wow i wouldnt off dreamed of using 3mm for the roof but if that works well what can i say,it just goes to show what can be achieved and nothing is gospel. What did you cover it with i used a quilted wadding then covered it all in a creamish leather giving it a fantastic look and not only holds the heat in well is very easy to clean.

On the insulation lads;
Has anyone used spray foam as used on narrowboats for insulation? Seems to have good insulation values and will cover all areas.
Would be interesting to know how successful it would be.

Quite a few conversion i've seen have used it. I sem to recall reading on SBMCC that the heat when it cures can distort panels?

I think most of the interior side ply is reusable, either by flipping it as you say or maybe filling and sanding some appropriate epoxy/body filler to repair some small digs. Floor looks really battered though and not sure its even suitable for flipping over. I'll clean it all up in there over the weekend and give it a proper assessment though.

Biggest stumbling block I've got at the moment is one caliper slider bolt would you believe! One snapped when I was removing the calipers for cleaning etc. Citroen only sell a slider overhaul kit at £83 +VAT! I can get the pattern kit for £18 delivered but that has to be the most expensive bolt I've ever bought!:rolleyes2:

Ouch! Well I tracked down a supplier for my bolt in central London!:) Its one of the lovely old fashioned places but they seem to stock just about every nut and bolt possible! If anyone is in central London and stuck for a nut and bolt try these guys,

So I should finally be able to get the van to a drivable state and once I get the wipers fixed its MOT Time!

Wipers are turning out to be a pain. They were working when it was parked up a year ago but now, despite the motors best efforts, will only try to move. I've never know a linkage seize up so hard before? Started taking the motor and linkage arm assembly out yesterday but snow stopped play. :(

I'd hoped to had got the wipers working yesterday and was looking forward to removing the ply to try and work out how many boards of kingspan I'll need for insulation. Bloody wipers. Bloody snow. :(

Where do you guys buy your wall carpet?

I'd be interested in this answer too! I've found that it is known as 'lining carpet' and searching on FleaBay reveals stuff like this...

VEHICLE CAMPER VAN LINING CARPET SMOOTH "VELTRIM" THIN | eBay

But if there are better places to get it it'd be good to know!

Also I was in a Dunelm store in Bridgend on the weekend looking for bits n bobs, and found that they sell vinyl by the metre, which might be useful?
