Have you placed your van on SORN in mid March, then check with your bank

Back in early March I entered into a new direct debit agreement with the DVLA for the continuation of the VED as of the 1st April, at the time any kind of Covid 19 isolation policy and the closing of all caravan and camping sites hadn't even been thought of.

Then on knowing that all sites were being instructed to close as well as of course HM Governments isolation policy as I detailed on here at the time, on the 22nd March 'Millie' was put onto SORN and I was duly in receipt of confirmation........... job done, I thought foolishly!!

Then this morning my most beloved (who looks after all of our banking transactions) announced "the xyz DVLA have taken the April VED payment, I thought she is on SORN"..... so after my boiling kettle of a brain had calmed down slightly I made several attempts to make phone contact with the darned organisation, all without success, so I then started to look into finding an email address which I found to be like trying to find the proverbial needle in the hay stack!

So as of now I am in a bit of a quandry, the reason being that as I have already got a SORN number following my contact with them on the 22nd March, but now no doubt because of their cock up 'Millie' is still covered by the VED that I had cancelled!

I posted this exact same post over on our sister site Motorhomer and Dave of @wildebus fame has discovered that he has also had the April DD sum removed from his bank despite his van being on SORN.......................... So as this is the case I suggest that any and all of you who placed your vans on SORN in March and pay by DD, I strongly suggest you check your bank details to see if the DVLA have done exactly the same to you as they have to Dave and myself.

many thanks

Phil

Going on the internet google Phil it would seem that you are responsible for cancelling a direct debit, a company that you were paying a direct debit to can cease to draw the debit if you tell them you wish to cancel the payment, however to be certain you must cancel it yourself otherwise you are totally at their competence. The DVLA site makes it crystal clear that THEY will no longer collect money via that DD, so whilst the DD may still be active, it should have gone dormant as soon as the SORN is issued. It should not be necessary to cancel it (although may be good practice of course, but that is a different subject)

As I stated Dave if you don't cancel it personally you would be totally at their competence. Phil

As we don't ever normally do make any DD payments (I think prior to setting up this one with the DVLA we had only ever arranged one previously) and it isn't ever me that arranges anything with our banks but the boss who is, by the way, a very capable woman!

Yesterday she started looking into this matter and gave up, however following your prompt now Phil, she is making another attempt.

Thanks for the heads up.

Phil
