DVLC morons

Before christmas i eventually got round to sending my log book off asking for change of classification to motorhome and plg .I sent a note with my v5 which is what i was told to alter the form along with 15 pictures of outside and inside also showing the conversion and change of colour .I have just had a new v5 with the only change on it being the colour to grey its still down as a box van despite it having 2 house type doors and 5 upvc windows (the fact that you cannot get a meter euro pallet through the door means vosa wont mot it because they cant get the weight in to test). There is no letter with the v5 declining my request just the v5 unless there still considering :mad1:

I think there have been a few people having problems with them when converting larger vehicles and horseboxes as the view appeared to be that due to their size they didn't have the appearance of a motorhome. Which seemed a nonsense when you look at some of the bohemoths knocking around.

You do not need to beable to put weight in the vehicle. It will be tested as presented. Ps I am a tester!

call them & ask, if I remember rightly, there would be a letter declining if there was a problem, they may have just missed the classification change out by mistake. They stopped re classifying vans that didn't look like motorhomes instead they came back as "van with windows" but that has since been reversed & gone back to the old rules.
As greenman has said as long as the testing staion can fit it in, they can test it as a class 4, you may have to politely explain to the tester though, if he hasn't come across it before.

vosa at chadderton refused to test the vehicle because they said they could get a 1m wide pallet in the back with the weight on because the doors were to narrow has been tested as a caravan now for 2 years

They are testing it in the wrong class, there's no need to have the weight in the back, have they always done it this way?

Firefox

They should test it as a class 4 if it is obviously converted and can't carry a load. Not testing it is wrong.

Mine is 3.3 tonne and is normally class 7 and the log book is not changed from panel van but they test as class 4 automatically.

They should change body type to motorcaravan, but I doubt if they will change taxation class. I thought they had a thing about not changing taxation class from first registration.

Firefox

They won't change LGV to PLGV on conversion. Not sure about HGV to PHGV. I know they are very reluctant to change the class.

Seahorse

I drive a 7500Kg ex prison wagon, converted to "live in". Taxed as PHG, MOT is class 4 as examiner can clearly see at time of test that it has been properly converted as a motorhome. I am making the assumption that you have completed the interior conversion to comply with their requirements. I am insured by Adrian Flux as PHG self build conversion. I am surprised that VOSA are giving you a hard time on it! Why dont you find another MOT station, as long as they can get your vehicle on the equipment they will test it. Hope this helps, and good luck!

AuldTam

My understanding is that it is tested as presented...as stated previously.

But you will need to find a MOT station that can get it on there ramp...it's size may be a problem for some MOT station's.

the truck as dvlc still seem to see it is motd class 4 elsewhere because as said before vosa wouldnt mot it because of the reasons above and because the v5 still states boxvan 7.5 tonne . the mot isnt my issue my issue is dvlc who have sent me my v5 back with just colour change despite sending them photos and a written request both on v5 in changes section and separate letter

But a motor caravan is a class 4 MOT...I think you need to have it MOT'd as Class 4 before DVLA will change V5 to motor caravan...I may be wrong.

As I said earlier, have you called them to ask why?

not been near a landline today will do this week hopefully they just altered it for colour change and still thinking about conversion hence no letter saying why they havent allowed my change over

Hello, If booked & presented at an official LGV test station & if the vehicle is still showing as a commercial vehicle on the system& doe's not meet 65% of its Axle weights it will fail, simplest thing for now is hand load it with items that fit through the door to reach 65% of it's axle weights, loading should only be required over the rear axle as the front will be ok for weight.

just got off the phone with dvla who have kept my vehicle in the same class as box van because that to a layman is what it still looks like

You should appeal. Your van has (presumably) all the internal modification required, i.e. bed, table, etc, and seems to fulfil the DVLA's quoted requirement for external modifications - it clearly has a window and a door which were not part of the vehicle originally.

The same policy should apply to all vehicles presented to the DVLA for a change of body type on the V5C. They accept panel van conversions with appropriate internal fittings and additional windows fitted, it should be no different for a box van.
