If you don't wish to buy Victron's VE.Direct to USB lead which costs about £25 here is a cheap alternative. I have tried this Serial Converter with a RPi 3 running the Venus software and a couple of Victron devices and it works perfectly (or it has for me).
Just three wires from the Victron VE.Direct connector (GND, RX and TX) to the Serial Converters GND, RXD and TX pins.

This device requires an FTDI driver which is already in the Venus software.
