Split charge system

schubert

Hi everyone . I am looking for a good split charge system for my new van any recomendations ???? . I will be full timing in the van so it's important to have a reliable charger.

I have new Iveco Daily with all the latest electronic systems so it needs to be compatable with them.

( 110 amp alternator with 3 x 125amp lead acid maintenace free bateries.)

Many Thanks Schubert

I can thoroughly recommend the sterling B2B charger. I bought it a couple of months ago and had it fitted and since then it has kept my battery topped up even on a short run. We never use sites, watch tv each night ( it is winter after all lol) and have the blow air heater on most nights and haven't had a problem

As you are fulltiming i guess you will want to get the most out of your batteries which means any of the cheapo split charge relay systems will be of no use to you as they still working off standard voltage regulation. This means that you will only get about 70% charge from your batteries.
Aim for something like the sterling or the adverc systems. Both are good but more pricey. I have an adverc fitted with a blocking diode and 4x6volt 225 amp/hour batteries. I generally get a week of use from my battery bank in the summer before my batteries start dropping voltage significantly and i run a 12v condenser fridge, dvd, stereo and led lighting set-up. About an hour to recharge the bank off the engine on tick over. Had the adverc for 5 years now with the same battery bank and its never even batted an eye lid.

I spent 9 months full timing with the simplest leisure battery recharging system - a solenoid that isolated the starting battery when the engine was not running and a battery recharger when (rarely) on hookup. There is a rocker switch to check on battery condition with three LEDs (red, amber, green) to show state of charge which is above the kitchen sink (along with water level indicators, water temp and fridge on/off LED).

If I had the money I'd love to buy some of these expensive leisure battery "maintenance" kits and have a look inside and just see if there really is all the smart electronics that they claim and that they do something smarter than an alternator and battery recharger - but I'm ready to be convinced.

i use a VSR between the main 110amp/h starter battery and the 200amp/h truck sealed leisure battery and linked to a CTEK mxs 10 battery maintainer/charger for when on hookup..

everything in my t4 was kept to draw very low amps so got the most out of the battery and can say never ran out of charge in the leisure battery.

:)
