rear view cameras

I wanted an 'always on' rear view camera...on the left as you look. Which is viewed via a rear view mirror mounted monitor. In addition I wanted a dedicated 'reversing camera' which will pop up on the monitor when reverse engaged.

To get the correct angle on the rear view camera I had to bed the unit in with structural sealant. I am happy enough with the result and picture is perfect.

For the reversing camera I bought the 'smallest bullet camera available' and, as you can see, fitted it into the high level brake light. Picture quality fine for reversing. The fitting took some time to get nice and snug but, I think, it looks very neat.

You could use this camera as a rear view as well if you wanted the neatest single camera solution.

All cables were run carefully via ducts and gators so nothing is exposed / visible. There is no interference between cameras. I did replace the wire on the cheapest camera with some 2 core, 1mm multistrand, insulated cable and took my time on the connections.

The rear brake light is unaffected by the camera...you can't tell the camera is there when deploying brakes..something I was concerned about before fitting.

Used structural sealant again to secure the camera. It being so light, with a very snug fit, I have no issues with this method.

I would recommend this solution to anyone who wants a stealth rear camera. Just check the dimensions of your brake light's lens first.

Cheers
Rob

We put twin cameras in the back of our big 6-wheel trailer to give us continuous rear viewing while driving. Cameras are the same as yours although one supplier's was bigger in diameter than another's.

We use one on one side for UK driving and the other side for Europe:

As the trailer is over 8 metres with the drawbar, we fitted a radio link in the front of the trailer and a receiver in a plastic box in the Discovery, permanently wired to the monitor.

Apart from the parking assistance lines it works fine.

Liking the work here

Great to see some top quality self installations.

I was quite pleased with my efforts...now I see there is a high standard of work to live up to... I am still pleased with my work but will see this as a minimum requirement going forward
