Insulating a bulk head and windscreen covers....

Morning all,

I have a high top transit which has a fibre glass(?) roof, it was already converted when we bought it and we have just modified the interior to suit our needs. One issue is the bulkhead has been turned into a cupboard but not insulated in any way so condensation is a big issue. I have ordered a roll of this: Van insulation foil roll for vans and campervans. | West Country Campervans and wondered if there was any other layer that I would need. My only requirement is it to be a dry storage space but don't want to loose too much space with thick insulation.

Also has anyone made their own window insulation mats like this: Cab Window Insulation Mats | CampervanConversion.co.uk I wondered if I could utilise the foil material and make my own in some way, maybe with a layer of bubble wrap glued on? Clearly I would love custom made ones but am just concerned about price.

All tips and advice gratefully received!

Thanks in advance
Chris

I've made interior window covers using the silver bubble wrap stuff and glued on window suckers (I picked up a packet of window suckers from a pound shop at Christmas, and they were just the job, although you might struggle to get them this time of year). For me, my homemade efforts have been fine, perhaps not as good as the expensive purpose made ones, but certainly better than nothing and I've noticed a huge difference when using them, both in winter to keep the warmth in and in summer to keep the van cool for the dog.

Your link to the van insulation foil is the cheapest I've found for such stuff, I've been getting the same stuff from B&Q / Wickes for about the same price, but it's 7 or 8 m length and 600m wide. What you have ordered is double thickness so definitely better value for money, a good find.

I've also made curtains for the doors of my van and also between the cab and the back (I took out my bulkhead in my Transit) and I double lined the curtains and put a layer of silver bubble wrap inside the cab curtain, it's a bit bulky but you can fold it concertina-like and that's made a massive difference too.

I'm also planning to put some insulation in the cab doors and also to insulate the cab floor.

I don't know if this will be the right thing for you but I bought some neoprene sheeting for inside my front screen. It's not fixed permanently, obviously, but neoprene is an extremely good insulator.

I just did a search on Ebay. There' a company will do all different sizes, thicknesses and colours.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm going to have a bash at some homemade ones and see how they go...
