fitting flettner style rotating roof vent to 08 boxer

matttransitconnect

Hi All
I have a 2008 peugeot boxer(really should change my user name!). I'd like to fit a spinning roof vent for added ventilation from damp smelly wetsuits and boards.
Has anyone done this to a boxer? Ive seen plenty on the road with them....however on the flettner website and other manufacturers it says I need a flat section of roof 145mm wide. Best I have is 70mm. Can i fit it across the ribs in the roof?Anyone have any advice?

thanks!

if you get some bits of flat upvc plastic from a double glazing or roofing supplier, and some mastic/butyl tape from the same place or a camping shop, you can cut pieces to fill the roof corrugations to make the roof flat enough to fit the vent.this is how you fit any roof vent.i'll find you a link to the tape if you needit, its good stuff

When I fitted roof vents (2008 Citroen Relay) I just used the Mastic tape to fill in the corrugations. Then a strip of mastic tape all the way round to bed the vent onto.

There were 2 fitted in my Transit roof when I got it, it's ribbed too, and both leaked. I had one removed and the mechanic showed me the part, and the seal was worn in places but not in others because it hadn't been built up properly to take account of the ribs. The leak was where the seal wasn't properly fitted to the roof and it was a good job I had it removed because the roof had rusted very badly underneath where the seal wasn't touching. So I've had to have the rust cut out and the area patched - hopefully I'll fit a roof window there so it's only temp.

I tried to remove the other one to check that but the bolt holding it together was so rusted that I couldn't get it off. At some point I'm going to have to get it off though and probably replace it but the leak in that one wasn't too bad, just the odd drip so I used Capt Tolley's crack cure around it and sikaflex, although I couldn't get the sikaflex nozzle right underneath the vent close enough to seal right round it. But the Capt Tolley's seems to have done the job and I've had no problems with it in the past 12 months.

I leave mine open all the time, there doesn't seem to be any draught coming from it and I worry that I'll forget to open it if I leave it closed. It's right above my gas cooker so carbon monoxide should hopefully go straight out of it.

Make sure you put plenty of grease on it though cos if it squeaks, in windy weather it'll stop you from sleeping!
