Downsizing ideas

mariesnowgoose

These guys live over in the USA/Canada. Doubt if we'd be allowed to live in our garages in the UK!
Some interesting ideas though.

Stick with it to the end (or fast forward) as this chap has also designed & built his own campervan - lovely workmanship & some very practical ideas to think about.

Jays

Great to watch loads of good ideas!
However what’s the thoughts on
The loo?
No internal shower?
A fixed bed?

i have trouble with these youtube people, they're all so wealthy that they can easily put their ideas into practice.
years ago i saw an article about a guy who's wife had died and he lived alone in a 3 bed house.so he built a 6'x 8' shed in the living room. easy to heat and keep tidy, room for his bed ,a chair , 2 burner and grill and his telly- proper downsizing !

You wouldn't need to worry about downsizing if you got rid of that useless husband of yours Marie.

Welcome back x

Oh, hello Neil..........

I think we all get that bit Trev but shows what can be done with a bit of imagination.

Fast wondering why I bother to post ffs

This is what I would like to downsize to..... right now, please !!!

1 bedroom country house for sale in Portugal,Castelo Branco,Póvoa De Rio De Moinhos, Portugal

Anybody fancy joining in? I could buy it outright, great for parking up camper. I'd live there most of the year if I could..... :) :) :)

Grape & olive picking, eh! Lovely bubbly. Nearly 8 acres and a lot of it looks pretty level. Have to learn Portuguese though, but could be worth it :)

PS Trevskoda - can't see the point of building a flash house tbh. Need to work out minimum you need for comfort ;-)

Me too actually, Mr Brown.

I don't doubt the talent or ingenuity, but definitely coming from a position of having enough money to start them off down the road. I end up feeling depressed ore often than not as I have neither the talent nor the moolah to do something similar.

Maybe I could manage a downsize to Europe though. I'm a good gardener and could quite happily tinker about on a smallholding until I'm too old & knackered to do it any more. They could just bury me under an orange/lemon/olive tree on the plot as fertiliser :)

See following, which I could perhaps afford to buy outright if I go about things the right way:-

mate of minebought something similar just up the road from my daughter's. put a static on one side , added a bathroom , roofed over the lot , we built an above ground pool which joined on his lare patio surrounde with decking , and now he's stuck 2 containers out the back for workshops , amazing what you can do legally down there !most important is land and water, the rest is easy

You seen some of the things they are doing with shipping containers these days? I would love that or a canal boat but Caz wants to downsize to something bigger than we have now :(

a german guy i'd done a couple of bars for got me to put wood floors in 2 massive russian army tents on his land, they were easily 40'x 20 , really heavy duty with windows and a stovepipe exit. couple of hundred each from some army surplus auction
then i put a roof across the 15' gap between 2 long containers , and timber floored it, he had upvc windows and doors put in back and front and moved in , the jammy bugger- no planning needed for any of it

You need the plot of land though, thats what stops me :( Plus if you have a plot of land can you manage without any services?

If I was younger and/or fitter I would be looking at setting up charcoal burning, thats one way past it

a plot of land with no services is feasible . water can be collected or bought and delivered, just get some 1000 ltr containers, or arrangements might be possible with neighbours .
once you have some sort of structure on the land you can get a basic agricultural electric supply .plenty for a small dwelling . a septic tank and soakaway might be easy to dig if the soil's ok, best done when no-one's looking

So my idea is actually do-able then, Mr Brown?

I figured it must be, plenty others have done it before, but I get so much negative feedback and shock horror reactions from the naysayers I know that I tend to lose a bit of confidence & tell myself I'm just daydreaming. But I'm not, am I? Main thing I've been looking for is something with a reasonable amount of level ground and its own water supply. Aesthetically a nice outlook too. Am I asking too much for too little money? It's scary too.

As for downsizing, I don't know how many pairs of shoes & other gear a person needs, but as long as I've got a tough pair of boots, weather gear, plenty changes of knickers & socks (they don't take much space, do they?) and some decent tools for working I'm all set :)

Wonder what power machinery you'd need to look after 8 acres? Looks like part of it is grass they've cut for hay. Might need a mini tractor & plough. Bet the local farmers have all the gear & might do some of it if I paid them, or I could maybe hire & do myself.

I've got this pent up, restless energy. Been building up for years and if I don't do something to really change my circumstances, other than endlessly talking about it, I'm going to explode! Six years to go before can draw state pension.

Anyway, on that front I've booked a local estate agent for end of this month to give valuation on our house. Need both selling & letting values, can't decide which is best just yet, but I'm leaning towards selling. That's if the Russians haven't bombed the cr*p out of us all by then, in which case I shall die without living my days out in a bit of warmth. Boo! Hiss!

Jeez, this weather! Nuff to make you slit your throat up north just now. Gonna be hot next week they say. Fingers crossed, god knows we desperately need it. Plants in my garden are rotting, the hedges are dying back and the grass in back fields is turning brown. Never known the ground so waterlogged either.

the weather down there can be crap too ! my kid's surrounded by mud at the mo and it still keeps coming , not drizzly either , torrential !
living down there soon brings out the hillbilly in you . you should see the guys from the Alentejo, nobody who lives there shaves , men or women . you'll also become a water miser
always a guy in the village for a bit of ploughing and JCB work.
the lifestyle is different enough that a lot of things cease to matter, like appearances, clean cars , food faddery, **** on the telly , world news etc, and the language is doable
