I was showing Marlene the Irish breakfast and she asked if I fancied a cooked breakfast - pushing against and open door there...

Not quite up to Trevskoda's Irish breakfast standards, but not a bad start to 2020 -

Being the tight old bugger that I am, is Sketchup actually FREE with no hidden charges?

Currently I use an ancient copy of Adobe PageMaker that I bought 20 years ago to make all my detailed drawings with but anything I create using it is purely in plan and I would love to be able to create 3D plans.

How much work is done for you in this software. Does it have models of furniture that you can edit the sizes on or is it line by line?
Bit of both.

There is an online library of ready-built modules available to add to your design. The library is populated by Sketchup users so it can be a bit random, but that said it is massive so there are all sorts of items. Even if there isn't the exact item that you are looking for there is usually something near enough for visualization purposes.

In my model above, the people, cooker, fridge, microwave, batteries, inverter etc. are all imported.

Sketchup is really quite easy to use but it is definitely worth following an online course to get up to speed quickly. I use Udemy for my business training so enrolled in https://www.udemy.com/course/master-sketchup/ which is currently on special offer for £9.99

I must say I'm having great fun moving stuff about and playing with my design. Definitely better to do it on the computer rather than in the van!

Phil,

Have a bash with Sketchup, it's great fun!

I use OneCNC and solidworks, so it would be dangerous to learn another set of commands. I still miss Autocad, but that was a pain in 3D.

I've used Sketchup quite a bit in the last few months and find it both brilliant and frustrating!

Resizing and stretching things seems painful and it's very easy to grab the wrong thing and make a complete pigs ear of your sketch.

I use it for what you might call block layouts, rather than the impressive detail linkshouse manages. A simple 3D rendition of your flat drawing reveals corners and holes you might not think of. So mine attached is no work of art, but it helps visualise how open or otherwise a layout is.
